A. Function

Function: to connect, to link, clauses/sentences to be complex sentences.

B. Clauses

A complex sentence consists of two clauses. They are main clause (induk kalimat) and subordinate clause (anak kalimat).

A main clause is an independent sentence.

Subordinate clause is dependent (need to connect with another sentence to have full meaning).

C. Subordinate Conjunctions

Subordinate conjunctions are needed to connect main clause and dependent clause.

Some common subordinate conjunctions in English.

although after before as because even if even though if provided that when rather than since so that

that than though unless = if not until where whereas whenever wherever whether while why

D. Punctuation

One thing that needs to give more attention in using subordinate conjunction is the use of punctuation. Punctuation is used to create sense, clarity and stress in sentences. Punctuation marks are used to structure and organize our writing.

Common punctuation in English:

1.     the period or full stop (.)
2.     the comma (,)
3.     the exclamation mark (!)
4.     the question mark (?)
5.     the colon (:)
6.     the semicolon (;)
7.     the quotation mark (“) or (‘)
8.     the apostrophe (‘)
9.     the hyphen (-) and the dash ( - )
10.     parentheses ( ) and brackets [ ]

In using subordinate conjunctions, comma (,) and full stop (.) are the common punctuation to use. Punctuation (,) is used to separate subordinate clause and main clause.

Use without punctuation in the sentence when the complex sentence begins with main clause.

E. Exercises

Give an appropriate punctuation to the following complex sentence. An example one has been done for you.

Complex sentence:

Unless the parents allow their children go to school learning from home is a better way to study

Answer:

Unless the parents allow their children go to school, learning from home is a better way to study.

1.  Without cleaning your hands with running water and soap you will not be able to enter the room
2. Even though you stayed at home during the Covid-19 pandemic it will not guarantee that you are safe if you don't live healthy
3. After shopping at the market you should wash your hands
4. If you are not using a hand sanitizer you should clean your hands with alcohol
5. Wherever you go don't forget to wear a mask
6. Whether you are sick or not you are not allowed to leave the house for 14 days after returning from the city
7. Until the doctor has not done the vaccine you are advised to work from home only
8. Since March 2019 SMA 5 Tana Toraja students have studied from home
9. Because there are still many people exposed to the corona virus the government does not allow face-to-face learning
10. When this country is free from the corona virus I plan to have a vacation to Bali
