Hortatory Exposition

It is a kind of text type that presents arguments or reasons to support the opinion.

Social Function

• to persuade the reader or listener that importance of a thing should be realized by everyone, or;
• to persuade the readers or listeners that something should or should not be the case.

Generic Structures

1. Thesis : Statement or announcement of issue concern.
2. Arguments : Reasons for concern that will lead to recommendation.
3. Recommendation : Statement of what should or should not happen or be done based on the given arguments.

Language Features

• Focusing on the writer: I, We.
• Using action verb: cut, build, throw.
• Using modal adverb: certainly, surely, obviously.
• Using temporal connective: firstly, secondly, however, therefore.
• Using evaluative words: important, valuable, trustworthy, believable.
• Using passive voice: Trash is thrown, papers are produced.
• Using simple present tense: speaking is a skill.
• The use of modals and adverbs: may, must, should, might.
• The use of emotive words: worried, alarmed.
• The use of words that qualify statements: usually, probably.
• The use of subjective opinions using pronouns I and we.

Thesis

Mobile phones is not used just for calling, but sending text, taking pictures, accessing internet, and much more. Many students bring their phones to school. For them, mobile phone has many uses. So, mobile phones should not be banned in school. Why do I said that?

Arguments 1

Firstly, students call their parents for other needs. By mobile phone, student can call or their close relative if they need something to be brought to school. In addition, mobile phone can be used to call their children when one of their families were hit by disasters suddenly. And then, student can called their parent to pick her up when want to go home.  

 Arguments 2

Secondly, increased of knowledge among students. When trying to find answer of difficult task at school, mobile phone can be used as a connecting to search the answer through GPRS or WiFi networks.

Arguments 3

Finally, expand the network of friendship among students. School is the right place to find friend. Average, student been at school about 7 hours or more. So that, a lot of students found their friend in the school environment. Therefore, communication between friends should be kept on of which using a mobile phone.

Recommendation

So, I think mobile phone should not be banned in school. But, use your phone in the time and right place so that no one was disturbed.

The Importance of Reading Reading habit is poor among Indonesians because most people haven’t realized the importance of reading. There are several reasons why reading habit is so important. Firstly, reading is important to transform knowledge and technology. By reading, one knows the world. Someone will understand what he/she doesn’t see by himself or herself. The lines of the paragraphs in an article contain pieces of knowledge. The knowledge is needed to improve the quality of human’s life. Secondly, realizing the importance of reading will make someone motivated to read. When we know that something is very important because it can give us valuable information, we will try to get or do the thing. For example, a businessman who always follows latest information or news will know what to do in his/ her business. He will make a good decision to make a transaction. Third, it is observed that children and teenagers who love reading have comparatively higher IQs. They are more creative and do better in school and college. It is recommended that parents to inculcate the importance of reading to their children in the early age. Reading is said to significantly help in developing vocabulary. You will keep on learning new words phrases, idioms, and learn to use them in several different ways as well. The children who start reading from early age are observed to have good language skills, and they grasp the variances much better. Fourth, a good understanding toward the importance of reading can be achieved by well organized. To plant an understanding is not an easy job. It needs a hard work from all components of the nation, especially the government. It can be done through various kinds of mass media such as TV, radio, booklets, bulletins, newspapers, magazines. Therefore, the importance of reading should be realized by our self to improve the quality of human`s life. It will be better if the government support about that. In this globalization world, those people with little knowledge will be left behind, to speed up the better change in this country, a good reading habit is really important.
