EXPRESSING RECOMMENDATION/SUGGESTION
should
SHOULD is used when we say what we think is a good thing or the right thing to do.
Pattern:
Subject + should + Verb 1
Example:
Everyone should keep social distancing during corona virus pandemic.
You should wear a clean mask.
The students should attend online learning during covid-19 pandemic.
should not (shouldn't)
SHOULD NOT is used when we say what we think is not a good thing or the right thing to do.
Pattern:
Subject + shouldn’t + Verb 1
Example:
Everyone shouldn’t shake hands before washing hands.
You shouldn’t study at school before getting permission from local government.
The students shouldn’t attend face to face learning in classroom during covid-19 pandemic.
EXPRESSING OBLIGATION
Obligation = necessary
Pattern:
Subject + must + Verb 1
Example:
Everyone must work from home to minimize the spreading of Covid-19.
(This means it is necessary to work from home)
GIVING ADVICE
should & had better
Pattern:
Subject + should + Verb 1
Subject + had better + Verb 1
You should stop eating fatty foods.
We had better stop eating fatty foods.
