A Finite Clause
Finite clause is one that includes a primary verb, a verb that can be inflected for tense, person and sometimes number. A finite clause includes a subject. It is an independent clause, which can serve as a stand-alone clause (sentence), a coordinate clause, a subordinate clause, or a supplementary clause.
Example:
- Yolan types “good morning, sir.”
- Yuspril is talking behind the camera.
- The students turn off the camera.
- Edlyn is a powerful girl
- Aprisel walks.
- Harun raises his hand constantly Harun raises his hand constantly and he talks in class
- We know that Harun raises his hand constantly
- Other students are annoyed because Harun raises his hand constantly
- The teacher ignores Harun if he waves his hand wildly
- A boy who raises his hand constantly wants to be the center of attention.
- Harun likes the teacher's attention, so he raises his hand constantly.
A Non Finite Clause
Subject
To speak in class is encouraged.
Speaking in class is encouraged.
For them, to speak in class requires self-confidence.
To play online games, must be connected to internet. (to infinitive)
Playing online games spend much data. (gerund)
Verb Complement
Resi loves to dance.
He dislikes watching TV alone.
The teacher encourages his participating in discussions.
Yuspril likes to cook.
Fani avoids to join the demonstration.
Marlina suggest cooking “tollo’ paria.”
I plan to visit Makassar today.
Preposition Complement
Afdalia smiled after [answering the question].
Trianna is used to [answering questions].
Intan is interested in [hearing the theory of nonfinite clause].
Non Finite Clause as preposition complement
